Rare advertising item for Hires depicts their trademark "Ugly Kid" holding a ceramic mug of root beer bearing his likeness. Lithographed by the Chas. Shonk Co., Chicago, circa 1905-1910.

SIZE: 19-1/2" x 27-1/2".

PROVENANCE: Phillip H. Morse, a vice chairman and co-owner of the Boston Red Sox.

CONDITION: Very good; some crazing to the black background, but only barely noticeable to the image of the boy himself under close examination; a few small shallow dings; some color touch-up to a few areas of the black background; overall a very nice and desirable example of this elusive sign.

Unless someone has tried to “age” the signs they are easy to spot. In general they are too well preserved, too bright and shiny. Any old sign will show signs of wear. There should be scratches, chips, rust, or some discoloration. The new signs look like what they are – new. If a piece looks too good to be true it probably is.

Take a good, close look at the illustrations. Do you see any little dots? If so, then the sign is new. Modern printing methods on some reproduction signs are made up of thousands of tiny dots. The originals used another method and have no dots.

The vintage signs that you are likely to find in this situation are likely going to be related to the business that is being renovated or torn down.  If it's an old gas station, you might find oil or gas signs.  If it's an old grocery store, you might find old signs related to food or canned goods.  Happy sign hunting!

I loved Smokey Bear, but the threat of forest fires in my area was pretty slim since there really wasn't too much forest around.  Oh well, the vintage tin sign that I saw for sale sure brought back memories, and I guess that's what antiques do.  They help us to remember times long gone and maybe loved ones who have since passed away.  Thinking about Smokey the Bear makes me think of so many other things that were associated with that time in my life; School, playing outside, my friends.  Those were good times!
